Bird sightings

I’ve been on a few bird outings with my wife and I don’t know about you, but I want to see the big guys -like Eagles or Owls. Last weekend we decided to brighten up a dreary day and head over to Hummel Park in Plainfield for a walk. And we saw this! Actually there were two of them (perhaps mates?) perched in trees and flying around.

You can find Great Horned Owls throughout Indiana and here is a great article about them from the Indiana Audubon Society. And we did hear the characteristic hoo-h’HOO-hoo-hoo call. The Cornell Lab All About Birds site has some good recordings if you are wondering. The first one on the list called “Song (Great Horned) is exactly what they sounded like

And today driving back home from a completely separate hike brought us to this guy having lunch!

In Indiana, Bald Eagles have come back in a big way since the 70s and 80s. They are all over now, which is great! DNR has a good write up here.
