Today was not a bad day to do a hike in Eagle Creek. We’ve written about Eagle Creek before. Check out that post if you want to know more about the park itself.
We hiked around the Coffer Dam (Red Trail) and started to hear these odd chirping sounds. We thought for a second it might be birds, but then we saw people trying to skip rocks across the partially frozen water. It was pretty cold today – cold enough for some surface freezing. If you need a scientific explanation, see this how stuff works post. There is an embedded video with the exact sound we heard.
We did see some interesting water fowl. First sighting for us, and from a distance these looked like two female mallard ducks. We were able to get close and they did not seem to be wary of passersby who were walking their dogs. Not totally sure, but we think these are female canvasbacks. If you know, please comment!
